Walter F. "Walt" Hummel, 85, of Queensbury NY, has reunited with his wife on August 6, 2023.
He was born August 21, 1937 in Johnstown, PA. to Mary Louise (Whatmore) and Walter Charles Hummel. Walt joined the Navy at the age of 17 and served on many ships and at many duty stations over his 20-year Naval career, retiring as a Quartermaster 1st Class in 1973. He made his final duty station in Norfolk VA his home with his wife Joan and started his family after his retirement. He moved to NY in 1998 to be closer to his daughter and four grandchildren.
Walt was very proud of his military career and enjoyed attending many ship reunions over the years and you could always find him front and center at Memorial Day parades and ceremonies, even participating in the parade riding his scooter with the local VFW Post in Queensbury.
Walt loved spending time with his family, especially his four grandchildren and took several trips to Walt Disney World and many other vacations with them. He was also a diehard Washington Redskins fan. If they won, he would be in a great mood, but if they lost watch out. When he wasn't watching football, he was watching old Westerns on television.
Besides his parents, Walt was predeceased by his wife of 29 years: Joan (Downs) Hummel and two brothers: John Hummel and Ronald Hummel, both of Johnstown PA. He is survived by his son: Ray Hummel of Los Angeles CA; his daughter: Kathy Stevens and her husband Chris of Cobleskill NY; his four grandchildren: Amanda Chenier of Schenectady NY, Kaitlin Ullman and her husband Adam of Bend OR, Logan Chenier of Anson ME and Zach Chenier of Norridgewock ME; two great-granddaughters: Addison and Kennedy; his brother: Robert and his sister: Alice.
