Doris Helijas Obituary

Doris Lewis Helijas, formerly of State Route 30, died very peacefully, with her daughter at her side after a prolonged illness, on Wednesday, March 3, 2021 at Discovery Village at the Forum in Fort Meyers, Florida.

Doris was born 92 years ago in the home of her parents, Seward and Rita Lewis of Fultonham, on October 14, 1928.

Doris loved music from an early age and playing drums in the Middleburgh Central School band.  She graduated Valedictorian of her class in 1946 and then attended Emma Willard Business School in Albany, New York. She worked at the Middleburgh Insurance Company for many years.

Doris married Kenneth Helijas on November 18, 1950 at the Fultonham Union Church where she was choir director and played the organ for 65 years.  Doris was an avid reader her entire life, enjoyed music, gardening and was an active member of the Eastern Star and the Red Hat Society.

She was a proud and supportive mother to her two surviving children: Gail of Lehigh Acres, FL. and Mark of Thetford, VT.  She was a beloved grandmother to Jason, Matthew and Rachael and had six great-grandchildren.

A spring interment will be alongside her husband and parents in the Breakabeen Cemetery, Breakabeen, NY.  There will be no formal services held.
