Middleburgh – Success is measured by how one lives their life, carries themselves and how one treats others. Charles D. Quimby, Jr., of Cliff Street, knew the value of the “Golden Rule” and followed it through all of his 89 years until his last breath on Wednesday, September 10, 2020.
He was born in Gloversville to Thelma (Miller) and Charles D. Quimby, Sr. on November 27, 1930. That was Thanksgiving Day and it certainly instilled a humble, grateful quality in Charles that never left him. It was his favorite day and his favorite holiday forever and anyone that knew him could attest to its aligning with his gentle, nurturing spirit.
Charles graduated Valedictorian of his class from Northville and actually held his first job as a caddy at age 9. He went on to work at The Captain’s Table, a popular local restaurant, and then to General Electric and on to New York State. It was while working at the State level he learned of the opportunity to transfer to the NY Power Authority in North Blenheim and Gilboa. From day one, Charles was there working and sharing his knowledge and quiet charm with everyone lucky enough to cross his path before he retired in 1986.
Charles only worked 25 years with the State but enjoyed 34 years of retirement. He loved to read, hunt birds, tend to his gardens and plant trees all over the country, a conservationist and arborist at heart. He instilled the same love of nature within his family as well. He enjoyed time spent at his Adirondack camp in Indian Lake and sharing hundred of stories and humorous anecdotes of his life and work with family and friends, whom he loved and cherished and who respected his intelligence and character.
A fateful day at Million Dollar Beach in Lake George introduced him to a beautiful young lady named Ruth and their love affair lasted from their wedding in 1956 until her predeceasing him. Charles was also predeceased by his son: Stephen Quimby.
Loving him forever are his daughters: Jean Quimby of Middleburgh and Janet Stauffer of Mexico, NY; his son: Charles Quimby of East Syracuse; his grandchildren: Jennifer (Terry) Golden, Rick (Katie) Miller, Erin Quimby, Charles P. Quimby; his great-grandchildren: Erik, Alex, Ian, Ellise, Evan, Alaina, Anna, Abe, Isaiah; his siblings: Jean St. John of Bangor, ME, John Quimby of Ballston Lake; several nieces and nephews and his dog, faithful friend and companion, Chase.
All are invited to a visitation with Charles’ family from 10AM-12PM on Monday, September 14, 2020 at Coltrain Funeral Home, LLC 134 River Street, Middleburgh, with facial protection and distancing respected by all. A graveside service in Middleburgh Cemetery will be held immediately following the visitation on Monday.
