Nettie J. Spencer, 71, of Gridley Road, was welcomed to Heaven on August 14, 2018 surrounded by her loving family, at St. Peter’s Hospital in Albany.
Nettie was born on September 26, 1946 in the Town of Middleburgh to Helen R. “Honey” (Effner) and Michael C. “Dutch” Irving. Nettie graduated from Middleburgh Central School in 1964 and worked as a senior clerk and stenographer for the NYS Department of Local Government in Albany before focusing her time on raising her family.
She devoted her love, talent and energy to them throughout her life, rarely missing an activity of her children, grandchildren, God-children and many others. Nettie’s other joys were found in her kitchen, making an assortment of recipes including her famous weed tea and stone soup. And as much as Nettie loved tending to the beautiful flowers in her gardens, she also enjoyed sewing her warmth and love into keepsake blankets for her family. Passionate about life, Nettie never missed the opportunity to decorate her home, especially for Halloween and she adored dogs, always earning their love in return, attesting to her kind and beautiful spirit.
Holding her memory the closest are her husband: Robert F. Spencer, of Middleburgh, whom she married on May 7, 1966 and her children: Stephanie (Bryan) Barrett of Lake Luzerne, Shannon Spencer of Rensselaer, Matthew (Tamatha) Spencer of Nassau; her grandchildren: Tyler Spencer, Luke Barrett, Alex Barrett; her brother: Michael R. Irving of Middleburgh and many other cherished family members and friends.
Coltrain Funeral Home, LLC, of Middleburgh is honored to be caring for Nettie and her family and extends the invitation to join them for a memorial service at 10AM on Wednesday, August 22, 2018 at the Middleburgh Reformed Church, 178 River Street, Middleburgh with Rev. Jeffrey Kelley officiating. Interment will follow at Saratoga National Cemetery, Schuylerville.
Nettie’s family request memorial donations to the Middleburgh Reformed Church, PO Box 112, Middleburgh, NY 12122 or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1000 Dept.142, Memphis, TN 38148-0142
