Edward Dunscombe Obituary

Edward James Dunscombe, Sr., “Ed,” 84 of Schoharie, NY passed away after a short illness at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown on Thursday, March 28, 2024 surrounded by his loving family.

Ed was born on July 19, 1939 on Fort Jay, on Governors Island, NY, the son of Leslie Albert Dunscombe and Jenny (McCarthy) Dunscombe.

Later on in his life he and his family moved to Huntersland, NY where he married his wife, Mary, on February 11, 1960 and was happily married to her for 64 years.

He served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1958 until his honorable discharge in 1962.  He worked for the L&M Appliance and EH&I Corporation after his discharge from the Navy.

Ed & Mary started their own business, Ed’s Electric, in 1968 and then opened their store Electri-Center in the village of Middleburgh.  He served many local customers’ electrical work needs over the years, as well as sold and serviced many major appliances before his retirement in 2016.

Ed was active in several groups and held many positions over the years including former President of the Middleburgh Rotary Club, one of the founding members of the Middleburgh Merchants Bureau, member of the Schohanna Electric League, former President of the HitchHikers of America International Club as well as member of Huntersland and Middleburgh Fire Departments.

His pride and joy in life was just being surrounded by family.  He took the family many places over the years in their camping trailer.  He was a selfless and dedicated family man and his family always came first.  Some of his hobbies and joys included camping with the family in their camper, collecting Volkswagen toy cars, watching the NASCAR Cup Races and going to Cape Cod and Maine once or twice a year.

His loving memory lives on with his devoted wife: Mary (Garner) Dunscombe; two sons: Edward James, Jr. (Rebecca) Dunscombe of Amsterdam, NY and Mark Edward (Sherry) Dunscombe of Huntersland, NY; grandchildren: Nicholas, Nola, Marker; many great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents, granddaughter: Megan Corey and his siblings: Beryl Shaylor, Leslie Dunscombe, Jr., Charlotte Brouwer and Marjory Rivenburg.

At Ed’s request, no viewing or formal services will be held. Please “Plant a Tree” or memorial donations may be made to the Middleburgh Emergency Volunteer Ambulance Corp (MEVAC) PO Box 817, Middleburgh, NY 12122, in Ed’s honor.
