Huntersland: Marianita “Marion” Pitre, 68, of Coons Road, died peacefully, Saturday, April 8, 2017 at her home following a courageous battle with cancer.
Marion was born Marianita Lugo on January 14, 1949 in Yauco, Puerto Rico to Cornelia (Echavarria) and Damian Lugo.
She came to America at 17, as an au pair for her cousin, and made it her home. While a bridesmaid in a friend’s wedding, she was introduced to an usher, Felix Pitre, who would become her groom.
While quiet and shy, Marion would become more comfortable and eventually join her husband on stage with his traveling children’s performances, often providing crowd control and even signing autographs.
Marion also worked as a retail associate at Stern’s Department Store in Nanuet and was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker who enjoyed cooking and reading.
Marion moved to Huntersland in 2006, enjoying the solitude of the family’s country home and the friendships and extended family found at the Huntersland United Methodist Church, their “Little Church of Love,” as Felix named it in song.
Marion was predeceased by her parents, her sister: Carmen and her brother: Luis.
She is survived by her beloved husband, friend and caregiver: Felix Pitre, whom she married on September 22, 1973, her sons: Felix (Portia Poindexter) Pitre, III of Jackson Heights, NY, Brandon Pitre of Woodside, NY; her grandsons: Sylvan and Rafael Pitre and her siblings: Blanca, Susy, Lydia, Edith, Lucy and Jesus.
A Celebration of Marion’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, May 13, 2017 at the Huntersland United Methodist Church, Huntersland Road, Middleburgh, NY with Rev. Carol Coltrain officiating.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Coltrain Funeral Home, LLC of Middleburgh.
